Bees moved because tree surgeons don't appreciate being stung! Just moved 9 hives to a new apiary while their old apiary is having a few large trees felled and removed. Most of the hives were eye poppingly heavy to pick up and move having well stocked honey larders ready for winter. The owners of the land where they were thought it would be just a matter of moving them 100 metres or so whilst the tree surgeons did their stuff. But over such a short distance most of the flying bees that have a 'mental map' of the local area would fly back to where the hives used to be and hopelessly mope about and at this time of year probably get chilled and die.
