This picture shows how bees will build their honey combs if left to their own devices. On this occasion the bees attached the top of their honey combs to a transparent plastic sheet allowing us to see the comb in cross section. In order to put the bees into a bigger hive I had to cut all that lovely honey comb away and the honey felt surprisingly warm to the touch. Because this was a 'baby' colony I let them keep their honey and put the combs back inside their bigger hive where they could reuse the honey to grow into a larger colony.
